The Mustangs of Mission Farrier School
At Mission Farrier School, our mustangs are more than training partners—they’re teachers. Horses like Jeremiah of the Paisley Desert, Mighty Shaniko, the Amazing Quigley, and others have shaped our program with their honesty and resilience.
Fresh off the range, their feet tell a story written by miles of rock, sagebrush, and survival. Studying these hooves gives our students an authentic look at natural hoof mechanics—balance, distortion, pathology, and function in motion.
While many assume mustangs always have exceptional feet, they can develop the same issues as any horse. They are, like all equines, a product of genetics, nutrition, and environment.
Every so often, though, a mustang arrives with truly model feet—hooves forged by movement and tough country, paired with the right genetic advantages. These horses help us understand what ideal really looks like and guide us in improving compromised feet by applying those same principles in our trims and shoeing systems.
